The Catholic Church in the United States is in the middle of a three-year National Eucharistic Revival sponsored by the Bishops of the United States meant to inspire and prepare the People of God to be formed, healed, converted, united, and sent out to a hurting and hungry world through a renewed encounter with Jesus in the Eucharist – the source and summit of our Catholic faith.
This eucharistic movement seeks to bring together clergy, religious, laity, apostolates, movements, and parish and diocesan leaders to spur momentum, collaboration, and lasting impact for the renewal of the Catholic Church in the U.S. over the next three years.
All the members of the Archdiocese of New Orleans - lay, clergy, and religious - are invited to build on the momentum started in the Year of the Eucharist & St. Joseph in our local church in 2021, experience the grace-filled power of encountering Jesus in the Eucharist, and witness with joy.
Archbishop Aymond declared 2021 as a Year of the Eucharist in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Shortly afterward, Pope Francis called for a special Year of St. Joseph for the universal Church.
Beginning on the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord, January 10, 2021, the local Catholic Church entered into a time of renewal, healing, and communion. Through regional events, weekend homilies dedicated to deepening our understanding of the Mass, lectures, presentations, and activites, the year was dedicated to helping all of us, clergy, religious, and laity, grow in our relationship with Christ through the Eucharist with the powerful intercession of St. Joseph.
At the same time the Year of the Eucharist was taking place in our archdiocese, the Holy Spirit was inviting the United States to find unity and renewal through a grassroots National Eucharistic Revival. This movement—discerned and approved by the bishops of the U.S.—is critical to rekindling a living faith in the hearts of Catholics across America, unleashing a new missionary chapter at this pivotal moment in Church history.
This first year of the Revival invited bishops, priests, and diocesan staff to respond to the Lord’s personal invitation while planning how to share this love with the faithful. While many dioceses began their Eucharistic events and outreaches, the heart of the first year was to pray and fast as we asked Our Lord to revive his Church.
The Revival is now reaching the pews! This year is about fostering Eucharistic devotion at the parish level, strengthening our liturgical life through the faithful celebration of the Mass, Eucharistic adoration, missions, resources, preaching, and organic movements of the Holy Spirit.
Parishes in the Archdiocese of New Orleans are encouraged to plan events, share national and local resources to form parishioners, and consider what Eucharist-centered traditions can begin during this year.
In the weeks leading up to the National Eucharistic Congress, a National Eucharistic Pilgrimage will take place.
Four pilgrim teams will travel from all four directions of the country from May through July of 2024 processing with the Eucharist through the streets.
The Pilgrimage is scheduled to make its way through the Archdiocese of New Orleans between June 7 - June 9, 2024.
The pivotal moment in the Revival timeline will the 10th National Eucharistic Congress - to be held July 17 - 21, 2024 in Indianapolis, IN. At the National Eucharistic Congress, the Church will draw into a deeper intimacy with our Eucharistic Lord, allowing our eyes to be opened and our hearts to be set on fire with his love.
The whole Congress will be an experience of prayer: a liturgical act offering the Catholic Church—those in attendance in Indianapolis as well as across the country—to the Father, through the Son, and in the Holy Spirit. This reconsecration will result in a massive outpouring of grace and renewed missionary sending as participants are moved to share the Eucharistic love of the Lord “for the life of the world” (John 6:51).
With the hope that both the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage and Congress will have enkindled a missionary fire in the hearts of the New Orleans and American faithful, the Holy Spirit will send us out on mission to share the gift of our Eucharistic Lord as we enter the universal Church’s jubilee year in 2025.
